The Harper Pier in Manchester was once a booming Mosquito Fleet destination. In the automobile era, the maritime traffic has dwindled, but the pier continued to be popular with boaters and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The historic pier had to be demolished last year because it became unsafe — but soon, the community will get its pier back.
The Port of Bremerton has secured funding for the construction of a new Harper Pier, and the project is out for bid. The new, 400-foot pier will be similar to the original one but will also have a float for kayak and canoe access. Construction completion is expected between October and January for the $1.4 million project.
Because the site has to be mitigated first, the port is organizing a beach cleanup on July 12. This is the final step before construction can begin.
Volunteers are needed to help with the beach debris cleanup, which starts at 8 a.m. and is estimated to end at noon.
