This whimsical sculpture is part of the public art collection in Uptown Gig Harbor, a destination shopping center.
Southworth artist Douglas Granum made the 9-foot sculpture from steel, covered with “Ferrari red” powder coat; and etched, stainless-steel rollers.
“The Roller Blader” greets visitors by the Green.House restaurant. Another Granum work, a rock fountain depicting a salmon run, is located in front of the HomeGoods store.
The Uptown developers’ vision was to showcase modern art as a way of differentiating the built environment setting from other parts of the city that display art tied to the city’s historic roots.
Uptown’s collection of public art includes about a dozen pieces, including several sculptures by renowned Gig Harbor artist Tom Torrens.
